Umpqua River Facing Due East

Take a ride on the Rogue Mail boat: Experience a unique excursion on a mail boat up the Rogue River. The mail boats began in 1895 out of a need to deliver mail into the nearby river canyon. Today, you can take a ride on a jetboat into the scenic areas of the river and see such sites as black bears and sea lions. Trips include shorter scenic routes to see plant and wildlife, and there are longer trips which will take you through the rugged canyons and whitewater rapids. The boats run seven days a week beginning in May and last until October. For further information contact Jerry's Rogue Jets at 800-451-3645 or 458-3511.

Trap a fish: The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife monitor fish traps and structures that capture some salmon as they return to spawn. Once the salmon are caught some of them are tagged by researchers and then returned to the waters. This helps biologists make an estimate of the total salmon population. One, in Winchester Creek, can be found by going to to the reserve's southern entrance off of Seven Devils Road. Head to Charleston and go past the main entrance to the reserve. For more information you can call either the ODFW at 888-5515 or the reserve at 888-2581.

Tour an Oyster Farm: Take a tour of Clausen Oysters and watch the shucking first hand. All visitors are offered a free oyster to sample, either cooked or raw. The oyster processing facility is located on the tide flats of Coos Bay. At low tide, oyster beds can been seen. The beds are marked by white sticks. The Clausen family gives tours to groups of 10-25 people by appointment. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and visitors are taken to the pier where you can see the oyster barge docks. Call 756-3600

Learn about the Estuary's: These are the places where freshwater mixes into the sea - they support an abundance and wide variety of life. There are a number of hikes you can take to reach the estuarys. There is one about 7 miles from Charleston on the Seven Devils Road. Another can be found at Wasson creek trail off of Hinch road. It is a short .75 mile hike which takes you through land pioneered by George Wasson. Call 888-5558

For more information about South Slough I invite you to visit their website. The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is owned by the people of the State of Oregon. Staff and daily operations are administered by the Department of State Lands under terms of the Coastal Zone Management Act. Policy guidance and technical assistance are provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Estuarine Reserve Division. For more information visit the estuaries site. Thank you John for the information! .

July 4th Fireworks: Each year there are two firework displays in the Coos Bay. The first takes place on July 3rd and is sponsored by the Mill Casino. The next evening the city of Coos Bay puts on a brilliant fireworks show. Both events take place in downtown Coos Bay and can be viewed from either the city boardwalk or from most any vantage point along Highway 101.
