![]() Go Tidepooling: On the coast's rocky shore the tide pools are abundant, fun, and educational. All kinds of plants and animals can be seen during the low tide in the pools. Sunset Beach offers one of the best spots in the area to explore. The Coast to Crest Interpreters League will guide you to many tide pools during a tour which may be taken throughout the year - especially for school children. The pools are best viewed during low tide. Please walk carefully on the tops of the rocks - they are very slippery and it's quite easy to fall into one of the tidepools. You may not only harm yourself but one of the many creatures that live in these tidepools. It is ok to lift an OCCASIONAL rock, but please replace it where you found it as it could very well be a home to one of the many creatures of the sea. Watch for sneaker waves and tides to insure that you have a safe outing. Go Fly a Kite: The often blustering winds along the Oregon Coast offer fantastic kite flying weather. On a sunny day the beach is the place to take your kite or watch others flying their kites. Brookings is well-known for it's excellent kite flying conditions, but anywhere on the coast is fantastic. The Oregon Kite Festival is held on July 19th and 20th. There are world class kite fliers and aerial teams. More information can be found by calling the Port of Brookings Harbor - 541-469-2218. Reading for Tykes: The Coos Bay public library urgers all youngsters (of all ages) to expand their reading horizons by taking part in the Summer Reading Program. There are storytimes, independent reading and many various shows throughout the summer months. The libary is located in dowtown Coos Bay at 525 Anderson Avenue. Sing a Song: Are you interested in Karaoke? For people 21 and older there are two restaurants/lounges that hold this fun - late night activity. The Timber Inn on North Bayshore Blvd in Coos Bay and Tadd's on West First Street in Coquille. Please call ahead to check out specific dates and times. Discover the Umpqua Tidewaters: The Umpqua Discovery Center in Reedsport is celebrating its 10th year of offering visitors a taste of the natural and cultural history of the Oregon tidewater region. The Discovery Center features interactive exhibits and programs highlighting the geography, marine life, ecosystem and history of the Oregon Coast. The 10th annual celebration is scheduled for August 23rd. Events will include a ceremony and performance by the Euguene Highlanders - an ensemble of bagpipe players. The center is open daily from 10am to 4pm between October and May. There is an admission charge. Seek out a Waterfall: The South Coast offers some beautiful waterfalls - perhaps a bit off of the beaten path. The falls you might want to enjoy include the Golden and Silver Falls State Park (22 miles east of Coos Bay), The Elk Creek Falls ( about 6 miles from Powers) and the Coquille Falls which are located about 10 miles further up the South Fork of the Coquille River. There are trailheads to traverse to reach the falls and day use permits may be required. |
