More North Bend Landmarks

Coos Bay Home and Site Map  North Bend Home

These are photographs and descriptions of landmarks that are south of the McCullough Bridge loop found on the previous landmark page. Again, a map of this area can be obtained at the North Bend Visitor's Center. Unfortunately not all of these buildings are still standing, but if you would like to see how they once appeared the visitor center has pictures available.

North Bend Information Center: This was formerly the Chamber of Commerce. You can find information all about the area here.

Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church 1910 - This is the oldest church still in use in the city. The steeple was removed and parts of the structure have been revamped. Today a United Pentecostal congregation meets at the church.

Old Growth Section at Menasha Corp: The arrows point to growth rings which correspond to historical dates.

Louis Simpson Homesite pre 1915: A large Tudor style home now occupies the site of Mr. Simpson's town home. It burned down in 1920. This was Mr. Simpson's "out-of-town" home.

Simpson Mill and Shipyard: Today only a few pilings remain of the development that was seen here. A cave in the side of a bluff was the Simpson store safe.

Ferry Side Service 1922-1936: Today, only some pilings remain on the Glasgow side. Ferry service was stopped once the bridge was completed.

City sign over highway 101: This is one of the last legal neon signs that now remains over a state highway. The supports to the sign are comparable to the bridge supports.

Steam Pool Logging Donkey: This was built in 1902 for the McDonald and Vaughan Logging Company. There is much more information about how this worked in one of the photos.
