Yes, it’s true. Coal use to be mined in Coos Bay and was shipped out as late as the mid-1800’s. There is a large deposit of coal in a few areas around the bay, and there are proposals on the table to reopen the mines. Precious metals have also been found. I’ll be writing more about this as I research the story.

Clamming looks good – crabbing is fading
I just posted the 7 day tide table and it looks as if there are some good days for clamming. Crabbing, however is slowing down each day and by mid-March I’d focus most of my time clamming. They have had a couple of clamming closures the past few months, but as of now clamming is open along the entire Oregon coast.

Clamming Closed
Clamming in Coos Bay and the surrounding areas has been closed. A recent spill from a waste-water management site is responsible for the closure. I will keep you posted.
