Cannon Beach was originally named Ecola but was renamed in 1846 after a U.S. Navy schooner "the Shark" was found washed up on the shore. The ship was wrecked as it sailed by the Columbia Bar. It is sometimes known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific" because of the extreme danger the seas present. Again, William Clark became the first Amercian or British explorer to reach this area. Today Cannon Beach is a rather affluent town with many beautiful homes that are often rented out tourists and others that would like to enjoy the Oregon Coast.
