Small Ocean Cave

This very small cave can be seen from the Coast Guard lookout station and is located in a small, rather well protected cove. There are a number of small caves in the local area along the beaches, some natural and others which were man-made. I do not have the specifics about this cave, but from a very close view it looks to be man-made. Years ago, before the area was settled by the White Man, the Coquille Indians thrived in this area living off of the land and the sea. Once the area was discovered by explorers the bloodshed began, and the Indians were forced to hide wherever they could in order to save their lives.

There is a small island near the Lighthouse where the women and children would hide, and I truly suspect a number of the caves in the area were also used as hiding places. It saddens me deeply to imagine the carnage which took place at the hands of the new settlers. Yes, I think this is a beautiful picture, and I used my Nikon camera set on the landscape mode to take this picture. It was mid-afternoon and the tide was going out and the ocean waters were very calm. It's a rare occurrence to see the ocean in this area so calm and green. Normally it's choppy (to say the least) and the water is a dark, dark blue if not almost black. I've been to this area many times in the past, and this was the first time I saw the water so green with some very blue tints - perhaps a sign that Spring is around the corner!
