Charleston, Oregon

HOME PAGE
I very often go to Charleston. To view some photographs of the area please visit my Charleston, Oregon photos page.

Charleston, Oregon is where I do most of my crabbing and clamming. To anyone not familiar with Charleston it is located just south of Coos Bay. The town is one of the largest marinas located on the coast. The town is rich in history and is a very popular tourist destination. The city offers quite a number of fishing charter companies and a number of restaurants, gift shops, and processing plants for the abundant sea life which is brought into the port to be cleaned, packed, and shipped all over the country. The piers offer great crabbing using simple equipment such as I have described on my dungeness crabbing page. During low good low tides the area behind the Portside restaurant is perhaps one of the best places to go clamming. You may want to visit my clamming information page if this is of particular interest to you. Perhaps the most important change for everyone to note is that a license is now required for everyone that wants to participate in these activities. Please reference my frequently asked questions page for more information about both of these activities. You will find my tips and suggestions along with the new license requirements on these pages.

Should you be interested in having someone guide you or you need to rent the equipment I offer both services. Just send me an email telling me when you will be visiting the area and let me know if you would like me to guide you or rent you my equipment. I will be happy to cook your freshly caught crabs, although there is a business in Charleston which will also clean and cook the crabs. I can show you how to clean the clams, but cooking and preparing them is in your hands.

Davey Jones Locker would be a good first start when you enter the city. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly and offers rental equipment for dungeness crabbing and clamming.

I strongly suggest that if you are visiting the area during the peak season (Spring break and the summertime) that you call ahead for reservations if you are planning on staying in a local motel. Should you be pulling a recreational vehicle there are many parks that offer full hookups at a very reasonable price. Again, please reference my list of RV parks if this is how you will be visiting the area. I have a very complete list with locations and phone numbers to the most, if not all, of the local parks.

I hope you enjoy your visit the Bay Area. You'll find that the people are friendly and the weather is great during the tourist season. I do suggest that you bring warm clothes. The winds are often strong and the temperature seldom rises above 65F. The nights are cool and heating is almost a necessity year round.
