Once again I was using my Nikon D50 to take this picture. I was walking up from the beach on day when I heard a very loud chirping sound. I followed the sound and was delighted to see my first Oregon chipmunk. There were actually a pair of them, but one was rather camera shy while this one seemed to love the attention, and he seemed rather interested in me and the camera. It was late afternoon on a early winter day when I took this picture. Due to the lighting conditions I needed to use a flash, but I did increase my exposure time to about 1 second. Fortunately, the chipmunk wasn't moving and I was able to get a clear, crisp picture of him sitting in the tree branches. I took about 20 pictures of him, but in my eyes this was the best picture I took of the chipmunk. He tolerated me for about 10 minutes and then disappeared into the trees.
I had a very nice surprise as I crested the hilltop coming up from the beach after taking this picture. There was a doe and her young fawn grazing on some freshly cut grass, and again they both seemed to sense that I meant no harm and allowed me to get very close for some nice pictures. The pictures of the deer can be found on my Oregon Picture Narratives page.
