Fort Clatsop got it's name from a tribe of local Native American Indians. It became active in 1805 and the smalll stockade was very cramped quarters for the men that lived there. The men were generally miserable due to the cold weather along the Pacific Coast. The men spent a great deal of time learning from the Indians, but the majority of the interactions consisted of small-scale trading. During the years of 1805 and 1806 this was the winter camp of the famous team of Louis and Clark. Unfortunately the orginal camp has long since decayed but it was rebuilt from pictures in 1955 found in the journals of Mr. Clark. It is now a public park just waiting for you to explore and also to walk perhaps in the footsteps of two very famous men.
