![]() Take a walk along any coastal beach and you will have the opportunity to find many interesting items. There is an abundance of beautiful sea shells, polished rocks, agates, driftwood and many other collectible items, but please do not remove any living animals. Places you might want to visit are: Cape Arago State Park South Cove: Bastendorff Beach County Park: Seven Devils Recreation Site and Whiskey Run Beach. The following lighthouses are close to Coos Bay and most are open for tours. The Chamber of Commerce can provide you the directions to each: Umpqua River Lighthouse - Cape Arago Lighthouse - Coquille River Lighthouse. You can easily reach my Oregon Coast Lighthouse Page. There are many sites to watch the approaching storms as they bombard the Oregon Coast. The cliffs and beaches that provide lovely vantage points to name a few are: Shore Acres State Park: Bastendorff Beach Park and South Jetty: Cape Arago State Park: Simpson's Reef Overlook During the months from November through May you can view the migration of gray whales that are coming from the Arctic Sea on their long journey to Baja California. Late December they can be seen in great numbers as they head south for the winter. There are official whale watching stations often staffed with volunteers that will happily show you what to look for. Adult male whales and females without calves can again be seen heading North in March and April. The female calves often pass through as late as May. You need to look for a vapor blow or "spout", or for portions of the head and tails as they surface. A good pair of binoculars is needed for the best view. Early mornings or calm, overcast days are the best times for spotting whales.
