Two Hoverering Coast Guard Helicopters

This picture was taken in the bay about 2 miles from the entrance to the harbor. The Coast Guard is always on alert, and one way they stay sharp is by practicing different types of maneuvers. These two helicopters (and a ship out of view) were taking turns approaching the ship and then dropping divers into the water. The divers would then be picked up by the ship and then they would drop back into the ocean to be hoisted up by one of the helicopters. I listen to them on my marine scanner, and I can usually get a good idea of what they are doing either by watching or listening. The local Coast Guard recently had their helicopters upgraded with new engines and instruments. They make a very distinct sound; their engines almost sound like a small jet so when I hear them passing over I usually head for the beach to watch. It's nice to see, and I'm sure a great comfort for those that depend on them for the safety. They risk it all in order to keep shipping safe in and around the waters of Coos Bay.

This view shows just how close they work together, and how great they are at their jobs. Hardly a day goes by when the Coast Guard is not out patrolling or practicing. Rain or shine they are out and about the only thing that keeps them grounded are excessive winds and very dense fog. It takes great skill and practice to become part of the rescue teams and the community is well-served having them stationed in Charleston and North Bend. Thank you for your dedicated service!
