The Mary D. Hume

This old tugboat may no longer in service, but it had quite a distinguished career during it's time at sea in the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. Mr. R. D. Hume salvaged the working steam engine from another ship and then floated down river a 13 foot thick white cedar tree which he used as the main mass for his new ship. In January 1881 the ship made her maiden voyage (the ship was named after Mr. Hume's Wife). The ship was refitted with Halibut Dories for a brief period of fishing in the Alaskan waters. The venture lost money so she was refitted back to being an original tugboat. This ship served many captains for over 60 years and now has her final resting spot in the Port of Gold Beach. I thought it was fitting to take a picture of this old timer in black and white to help bring back the era.
