This picture was taken using a Nikon D50 Digital SLR camera. My exposure settings were extremely fast at 4/1000th of a second. Normally it's hard to get a nice photograph as such a high speed, but the sun was a big aid in allowing me to adjust the exposure time. There is an area full of bottlebrush plants not far from home and during the spring and summer when the plants are in full-bloom they are a haven to the hummingbirds as they come back to spend the Oregon Spring and Summer months.
They dart around so fast that's it's almost like fishing - patience and a bit of luck is required to get a nice photograph. I spent the better part of one afternoon this past summer taking a series of hummingbird photographs, and I was very pleased with my results. The joy of watching these birds hover in mid-flight as they drink the nector is nothing short of awesome!
