I have a couple of pages about lighthouses and I'm awed at the few lighthouses along the coast that are accessible during tour hours. The tours are free and you can get a great view of a working lighthouse and just how they operate. This is a picture of the lens at the top of Hecta Head Lighthouse. The lens; also called a frensel lens is so very bright that ships can see them many miles out at sea. The lighthouses have guides which will be happy to answer any of your questions, and you'll also finds lots of literature about the lighthouse you are visiting. It's a great way to spend a day exploring the coast. You'll notice the lights stay lit even during the daytime, because along the coast it often fogs in and these lights are surely a great guide for all the ships out at sea.
