My apologies for not getting a newsletter out for the past few months, and I won't go into details why and in a sense this is not a newsletter in itself. This time of year there's not a lot going on in Coos Bay, but at the same time for the locals I think it's perhaps our favorite time of the year. We enjoy the tourists, but I think everyone here in Coos Bay would agree it's nice when they leave so that we can have our little town back to ourselves. The major news story going on in the city is the natural gas situation. Rather than try to explain it myself there's a nice article at
http://www.deq.state.or.us/wq/factsheets/fscoosbaynaturalgasproj.pdf . Personally I don't like the idea because I'm afraid how this project will impact the city, and I also don't like the location where they are planning on placing the plant. The gas is needed as an alternative energy source and would save everyone money, but I just don't think the tradeoff is worth it.
The proposed area known as the Coos Bay Spit in my opinion would be devastated and I'm also concerned that it would impact the recreation of the area. On the other hand it would be good for the local economy, so as with most things in life there is a good and bad side. One other event I'd like to mention is that the http://www.coos-bay.net/mingusphotos.html Choshi bridge has been rebuilt and is beautiful. It's the red bridge on the link I placed above. The picture I'm sending this time may have you wondering why?
Well, in all my years in Oregon this was the first chipmunk that decided to cooperate with me and the camera. There were actually two of them, and once they realized I was not going to harm them I think they actually enjoyed having their pictures taken. Long story short. I was at the beach taking some pictures when I heard them, so I walked down the trail following the sound and found them about 50 yards from the ocean just chattering away - I watched them for about an hour, and on my walk out I ran into two deers.
A mother and her young fawn, and again they seemed to sense no hostility from me and were great posers too. I have resized the picture just a bit, but not as much as I have in the past. Enjoy and thank you for your support.
