Radar Hill is located off of Newmark Avenue and offers a beautiful view of the bay and the jetty along with the North end of the Spit. The office and clinic of the Confederated Tribes of
the Coos, Siuslaw and Lower Umpqua Indians can be found at in this area too.
There is quite alot of new
development in the area, and some of the areas nicer homes are
found there. The hilltop offers a great view of the
harbor and spit. Just past the spit in where the New Carissa ran
aground just a few years ago. There is some wonderful information
about the New Carissa here. Parts of the ship still sit on
the Pacific side of the spit. It makes for a nice day's
recreation to view what is left of the ship. You will need a
four-wheeled drive vehicle to reach the area, or if you are very
adventurous you can reach the area by foot or horseback, although
it is quite a long ways off the beaten path. On a very clear day
you can see parts of the wreckage from the hilltop. The day I
took these pictures, as you can see, was a typical Oregon
winter's day. Look closely at a few of the photos and you can
see the rain hitting the ocean. This hilltop and the view it provides is just another reason I love the area so very much. A few of these photos were taken looking east over the city. It was hard to get a great vantage point from where I was standing, but with camera in hand I often like to fill the memory card before heading home. I hope you enjoy these pictures.
