Red Sunset Reflections

Sunsets are one of my favorite things to photograph, and if the conditions are right we get some very beautiful colors along the bays and ocean in Oregon. I can tell by where the sun is setting that this picture was taken during the summertime. The sun was at it's furthest point north; during the winter the sun sets much further to the south.

The conditions in the atmosphere were just right, and the colors as you can see were a brilliant red and I also got a rather nice reflection on the bay. The sun is setting just over what we call the "spit" in Coos Bay. Please be careful when taking pictures of the sunsets. They can harm your eyes, and if you are using a telephoto lens you need to be extra cautious. I always use a tripod when taking my sunset pictures, and I usually set the timer and don't even look into the lens of my Nikon SLR. I've mentioned before that if you are lucky you may capture a green flash sunset. I've been lucky enough to see about 10, but you will seldom notice them with the naked eye. A good pair of sunglasses helps, but the camera is the key to capturing this phenomimum. Good luck and please watch your eyes!
