Jedediah Smith was the first American to cross overland from California to Oregon. The marker is located just north of Reedsport. Mr. Smith was surely a mountain man, although he was known to shave on a regular basis. It's even rumored that he killed a bear with his bare hands and a knife. He was a religious man and carried the Bible with him no matter where he went. He is perhaps best knows as the man who rediscovered the South Pass thus shortening the time it took to get to the west slope of the Rocky Mountains.
